From the President

Our institute was established as a research organisation on attitudes and approaches toward health and culture in 2015. This aim is achieved by connecting professionals in clinical care, global health and medical anthropology. Have you ever been confused by the differences in clinical fields or international cooperation that are caused by cultural differences? We aim to promote a better understanding of these differences, supporting efficient clinical treatment and global health through mutual understanding.

Diverse cultural backgrounds give rise to various philosophies, which, in turn, shape our lifestyles. Therefore, it is essential to consider these philosophies as the basis of healthcare services. Clinical services have a significant impact on individual lives and governments’ policies. Therefore, healthcare providers and policymakers must take great care when suggesting health strategies for patients and residents. To understand patients and residents, we need a variety of individual and group perspectives from both within and outside the culture. Our institute strives to offer diverse perspectives on different cultures.

Furthermore, we recognise the importance of understanding traditional medicine. Not only does it provide a more profound comprehension of patients’ values, but it also has a more comprehensive knowledge base in some fields than Western medicine. Additionally, conventional therapy has the possibility to reduce healthcare costs and improve the shortage of healthcare providers.

We hope our work will help people better understand one another.

KANSAKU Rei, MD, PhD
President of Institute for Multicultural Health
