A Message on Our 12th Anniversary

Today marks the founding anniversary of the Institute for Multicultural Health. We extend our deepest gratitude to everyone whose support has made this milestone possible. Established with the mission of bridging clinical care, public & global health, and medical anthropology, our organisation has evolved. While our activities began by sharing perspectives from these distinct fields, they have shifted toward collaboratively exploring issues from a broader, more comprehensive vantage point.

At our seminar last December, ‘Social Prescribing in Japan: A Strategic Discussion,’ we invited experts from diverse backgrounds—including a social worker, an epidemiologist, and a medical anthropologist—to deepen the discussion on how the connection between the individual and society affects health and wellbeing. At this month’s seminar, ‘Anthropology of Care in Healthcare and Welfare,’ an ethicist and a medical anthropologist shared sociological perspectives in a manner accessible to practitioners in clinical and long-term care settings. This helped us explore the fundamental nature of ‘care’ and the factors surrounding health. We selected these two forums to reflect a growing trend that prioritises people’s daily lives over medical facilities as the primary setting where health and wellbeing are shaped.

Meanwhile, our ‘Multicultural Health Plaza’—a space for interaction among experts from various fields—addressed topics requested by our members, such as telemedicine, global health in Vietnam, medical anthropology research in Rwanda, and medical training in India. Notably, the session on Kerala, India, was conducted in English. This enabled an exchange of views on the current state of medical education across different regions of the world and gave us a tangible sense of the expanding scope of our activities.

We look forward to your continued guidance and support as we cultivate a space for dialogue that connects diverse professional fields and provides opportunities to consider ‘health’ from multifaceted perspectives.
